My weekend!

My weekend, as shown above:
I found something to actually help me to comb my gnarly hair.  No, that's not Smurfette. (It is. And it was $1.98)
My elementary/high school/current friend Lyndsay is coming through Denver on Wednesday! That must be why I've been craving chocolate milk!
I spent Saturday night with Nicole & her little guy.  He cracks me up.  We had the best night of bad TV and delivery pizza!
Beth is dogsitting a few blocks from me, so Oliver had some new dogs to boss around.
Oliver laughs at all my jokes (lower left corner).
And then of course, my accordion & sewing machine!

Oliver was growling & barking at someone outside, but he was stuck under the afghan.  So vicious looking!
Yesterday, we made a coffee run and took a little cruise down Colfax, Oliver's most hated/loved part of Denver.

Happy Birthday to Karley!

Today is a very special day - Karley Ann's GOLDEN birthday! That calls for some celebration!

Yes, I now have an accordion.  My co-worker wasn't using it anymore, so I took full advantage of that opportunity.  The first thing I thought of when I got it on Wednesday was that I only had a few days to learn Happy Birthday.
I got it on Wednesday, but didn't get a chance to play it until Thursday night.  When I got home from work on Thursday, I was having trouble opening my apartment door - it kept hitting something.
Exhibit A..Oliver moved the accordion + case (without tipping it over) across my apartment and up against the door.  He must have just known.

I Miss These People

Here's a few little clips from my Christmas in North Dakota! Devotchka might have been a dramatic choice for the music, but since I'm seeing them live in a few weeks, they're really all I've been listening to!

Today was such a fun little day.
Loren invited me to a brunch/book signing at Japoix.  It was for a wedding planning book, but the food was amazing, there were bottomless mimosas & the atmosphere was fun!  Then we went to check out Fancy Tiger's new location (I can't believe I didn't buy anything) and stopped at Lovely Confections Bakery on the way back.  It's only a few blocks from my apartment, which is so dangerous!  I had the Red Velvet & Loren had the Samoa.

Then we had just a little crafting time (time for Oliver to lick Loren).
Roey & I have been trying to figure out wedding centerpieces and we may have found the main ingredient.  I had found a fancy pom pom maker at the farm, so we gave them a shot! My version looked....a little.....different, but I'm getting the hang of it now.

Pretty Yarn

I started a new blanket last night.  I'm using some leftover yarn from my last few big projects.  The circles will be colored, but they'll have white borders that will make them squares.
I sat on the floor to take this picture and Oli took that as an opportunity for a belly rub!

Oli New Blanket

P.S. I got a yarn winder for Christmas (which my Dad modified to work even better than it did!) and now all my yarn is looking pretty and is SO much easier to work with.

Joey helped me figure out how to use it over Christmas & he was a little disappointed when I ran out of yarn.

Oliver wuz cold

Read this morning's post (below this one) and then look what my talented friend Nicole sent me this morning.
Yes, that is exactly what I was picturing!  LOL! Thanks for the laugh Nicole!

Inspiration - Oliver edition

Oliver will go to any length to be comfortable and have an adequate nest, so when I saw this on Pinterest, I could just see Oliver's little face in there.  I sent it to Marie and she couldn't agree more.
Now I have to quick post this & log out before he sees that this can be done!

January Goals

In lieu of resolutions I decided to make monthly goals.  Not just any goals, but SMART goals (Thank you, library school).  So, being halfway through the month, I decided to check in.

1. A few of them are directly related to my quest of trying to relieve my headaches before I go back to the doctor - the first one being to get a CranioSacral Massage.  I had heard from a friend that this type of therapy helped her so much & she hasn't had a headache since.  While it was super relaxing, it didn't do anything for my headaches.  I'm checking it off my list anyway.

2. The second related goal was to go to the dentist and I'm happy to report that I have an appointment tomorrow.  I doubt my headaches are mouth/tooth related, but I'm trying just about everything!

3. Non-headache related, my third goal was to use my new(to me) kitchen-aid mixer 3 times.  Thanks to my major fail and then my success, I've used it twice!

4. Next was to go to the gym 4 times per week.  I failed at this the first week of January, but thanks to my workout partner, Kari, I've met this goal otherwise.

5. Get my dress altered.  I got this dress on Etsy with the hopes that if it didn't fit, I could alter it myself, but once I started to make plans to fix it, I panicked and decided to leave it to a professional.  I haven't done this yet!

6. Start a Quilt!
I've been busing preparing for this one.  I have this fabric line waiting for me so all I need to do is pick a pattern.  I am so in love with both of these books right now - so much inspiration!

I have one or two more goals, but I don't want to spoil the surprise!

Things I Made, Weekend Edition

Do you want the good news first or the bad news? Let's start with the bad news..these cookies.
I was so excited to get my mom's kitchen-aid and I wanted to start with her cookie recipe (that has now been renamed "Fart Cookies" by Joey & Katherine).
I was feeling so rebellious, because I cracked the eggs right in the mixer, which my mother would've never allowed.  Then things started to go down hill.
I thought substituting whole-wheat flour wouldn't make a difference, but it did.  They were 100% like sand.  I still cooked a batch, just to see what they'd taste like.  Not horrible, but too sandy to eat. (I ate 2.)

Moving on...I saw this sweater on Pinterest and I just had to make it.  It was super easy to make & I might actually wear it in public.  I also crocheted up a little red cowl during one of the many episodes of Dexter I watched!  I started putting it on while I was skyping with Karley and she said, "That is the ugliest hat." Haha! I agree. :)

And I'll leave you with this little postcard of a picture.  He was sleeping with his nose actually in the slipper (that's love!), but then he got a little bit more comfortable.

3 BFFs

Best way to start a Sunday - a group coffee Skype date with my best friends Karley & Beth..1,000 miles away and 1 mile away, respectively.
They were both cuddled up with the quilts I made for them! What sweet girls.

Family Time

I had SO much fun in North Dakota.  There was no snow until the very end of my trip and it wasn't that cold, so I didn't have anything to complain about.
I spent so much time with my family, plus I got to see some high school & college friends as well!
I'm excited that my next few visits home will be for Roey's shower, bachelorette party and wedding!!

"Thrifting" at the Farm

I found the most awesome treasures back home!  If I still had my little pickup (or a house to fill with things), I could've done a lot of damage!  On the drive back to Denver, Oliver had nowhere to be besides the passenger's lap (aka, my dad's lap). Thanks Dad!
Dad pointed me to several of my Grandma's craft supplies - dozens of knitting needles and crochet hooks and lots of little accessories still in original packaging!  I'm excited to test some of those little gadgets out.
Next I took...acquired sounds like a nicer word...I acquired a cosmetics case of my mother's.  At first I thought the keyhole was an O, so I thought it said Rob and I was thinking it was my dad's, but it's actually RB for Rosemary Breidenbach, which is less funny than Rob, but makes a little more sense.  I can't wait to fill it up with goodies.

Next, I picked up a few paint-by-numbers.  I already have one hanging.  Love them!

This is one of my favorite finds - an entire box full of beads & costume jewelry! Most of the necklaces are broken, which makes them perfect for crafts. I can't stop digging through it. Sigh.

Lastly, one of my little step-nieces found this calendar in the shed.  It's my mom's from the exact month & year of my birth.  I added the little heart, because there was no mention of me on that date.  There was an entry about my baptism on September 11 and you can see clinic appts in August, so I am on the record and official.

Winter Warnings + A Song

Just put her in front of a camera and you'll never be bored. Her vibrato and falsetto are pretty impressive! I think she must get that from Auntie Roey!

Mario Afghan, Finished!

I'm happy to report that I finished the afghan for Joey's Christmas present.  If I had a nickel for everytime I miscalculate some major detail about a project....In this instance, I didn't make enough squares, so I was franctically crocheting squares and connecting them from the moment I got home to the morning of our Olson Christmas, the 26th.
The worst part is I had hours and hours to work on it in the drive to North Dakota.  Oh well!

I didn't have an actual pattern to work from, so I had to keep looking at the same photo to get everything just right.  Below, I realized I had made a little mistake around his face, but it took me the longest time to realize what was wrong.

Here's the little recipient, looking so cute! He liked it & made good use of it at our two Christmas Sleepovers.  Then I stole it back from him so I could weave in the ends.  On my next afghan, I swear I'm going to weave in the ends as I go!  Rose has generously been helping me with that daunting task, so Joey can have his blanket back ASAP!
