Learning Again

Beth & I are starting a new project - a chevron afghan!
It's been almost a year since I crocheted anything but a granny square, so I knew I needed to practice.
I found this super detailed tutorial on Attic 24, so last night I gave it a shot.  I haven't had to build from the chain row in so long, and as soon as I saw that, I had a flashback to me & Kari failing so many times and saying that it couldn't even be done.
Ideally, I'd like a more pronounced ripple/zig zag, but this was a good way to learn the stitches I'll need to know!  As usual, I'll be consulting Loren for an expert's opinion.

We need House M.D (for dogs)

Yet another morning at the vet - the 6th appointment, 3rd vet (1st dermatologist) if you're counting.
I shouldn't have complained about a weekly bath...now I'll be adding to that twice a day (huge!) pills & twice a day ointment.  Still no diagnosis...still no end in sight.  Poor little guy!

Finished!!

Some mornings

Some mornings are made for wearing sweatpants under your work clothes & cuddling with your dog on the floor (because if you sit in a chair you sort of still feel like you're on a rollercoaster) while listening to Dan Mangan and waiting to see if you get a question on the chat reference you staff.

My Crock Pot Meals

I've been missing having a crock pot, so last weekend I paid what I would have spent on a meal out and I bought one!
Last weekend, I made a meal that I've made before in Marie's crock pot before - Chicken Tacos!
Yesterday I tried a new recipe that I found on  Pinterest - Chicken & Dumplings.
It was super simple.

I put these ingredients in for about 4 hours:
4-6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 cans cream of chicken soup
1 can chicken broth
1 tablespoon dried parsley

Then after 4 hours is up, I cut up a package of store-bought biscuits and let it cook for another 30 minutes.
It was so yummy & creamy! It was a little warm outside for it, but oh well. I can't wait to try a new recipe next week.

P.S. It's very rare that I leave the kitchen without an injury, and last night was no exception.  I stepped on a chunk of glass and was spending the last few minutes before Marie came over cleaning up blood, like any good hostess.
I'm actually not counting that as a kitchen injury, since it could've happened anywhere.
When I showed Karley my leftovers via Skype, I spilled a bunch of it on my computer, but at least she saw how good it looked.
I think Karley postest her latest blog post to make me feel better.

Snakey, the Birthday Snake

Last week Joey turned 9!
I was having trouble finding the perfect gift, but when I realized how disgusted I was when I saw this snake (and heard the cashier scream when she was checking me out), I knew it'd be the perfect thing for him.
I wanted to gross him out as much as possible, so I wrapped the gift separately, put the snake in my purse and went to the post office.  I was trying to be sneaky, because if I saw someone throwing a snake into a priority box, I might be a little alarmed.  Luckily, no one saw me & the snake and gift made it on his birthday!
Meet SNAKEY!

This one is my favorite! Snakey rides the rollercoaster.

Faceless Suited Man Sticker

Beth loves spotting the Faceless Denver Suited Man...She loves him three blog posts worth! 12 & 3
Well, look who I found on my run!  I would feel pretty proud of myself, but honestly, I've ran by him hundreds of times, so I can't really brag....but maybe he's new to the neighborhood.
To top this run off, I was also offered free pizza halfway through.  Temptation is everywhere! (I, of course, declined.)

Pete and Repeat

I am a song repeater.
I've been one for as long as I can remember.
Beth & I repeat this song by David Gray and when Roey visited, I repeated this song by The National all the way to Estes Park.  When I drove back to North Dakota, I bet I played this song over 100 times, when Roey & my dad visited, I repeated this song from Grease...we had just been to the musical.  During that visit, Roey called me out & Dad realized he'd been thinking Roey was the repeater. I was busted!
I've figured out ways to repeat songs by making a playlist, but then I discovered this little tool.
Type "repeat" into a YouTube URL before the ".com" to watch it on repeat.
And perhaps the most tangible example of my addiction.  My five-year-old car is showing signs of wear, all of which is concentrated in this back button.

MINI VOX, Destroy Target

Callie & Oliver reconnecting.
Are you sick of seeing pictures of me skyping? Well, here's some more anyway.  Roey is staying up late just to read this post...or any post. Hi Roey!
I called the Olson's last night & Joey suggested we "talk on the computer" and so that's exactly what we did.
They are just the best kids.  Katherine said she forgot what I looked like, but apparently that was just a ploy to try and visit Denver.  Hello guilt trip!!
Our video chats consist of Joey & Katherine fighting, Katherine covering up their camera and my favorite part, show & tell!  I got to see Katherine's artwork & Joey's greatest toys and clothes.

This made me laugh way too hard - Mini Vox.  We got this robot for Joey a long time ago & I was surprised to see him again.  It's voice activated, but it's very selective, so Joey says "MINI VOX" over and over and over again to try to get it to respond.  In this picture, it finally heard him and it's destroying it's target..aka, me.

I cannot wait to see these crazy kids again!

Progress!

I'm probably a little more than 1/3 done.   Here's the progress as shown on my little pattern. I can't wait to be done!

He gets me every time

I love getting book recommendations, and when they come from my favorite author, you better believe that I'll read it.  Yes, I'm talking about David Sedaris and his Recommended Reading List.

I've read so many books from his list.  Before he recommended Richard Yate's Easter Parade, he warned us that is was 100% heartwrenching/depressing and would, of course, make the perfect holiday gift.
I fell in love with Lorrie Moore, Jean Thompson and so many other short stories writers through his recommendations.

I just finished Blue Angel by Francine Prose.  As I read, I felt like I knew where it was going and I was thinking how clique, but I was mistaken!  So, as I've felt many times before, this book has me a little temporarily heartbroken, but it happened in such a beautifully written way.
I'm about to start Blindness, another book recommended to me by a friend almost 2 years ago.  It was super cheap for my Kindle, so I justified buying it.
P.S. Is it sad I got a hand cramp reading a "real" book?
Speaking of reading...Karley loves to read!

Putting it Together!

On Saturday morning, Loren & Francie came over bright and early for a little morning craft session.  I've been following Loren's lead on this blanket, so when she showed me that she started to put it together and showed me how, I did the same!
I still have 14 squares to make, but I'll get to those along the way.

Here's what I have so far.

I was feeling a little under the weather, so I slept, crocheted and read most of the weekend.  Oliver can't read or crochet, so he just slept.

Thursday!

this morning's sunrise

After work, I met Loren & Marie for wine at Cru.  I've been to the downtown location once, but we went to their Park Meadows location.
I got the "Latin Affair" wine flight. Mmmm Malbec!
Their fondue wasn't quite as perfect as Sienna's, but I'm not complaining!

Thrifting!

On Saturday, I went thrifting with a real professional, Nicole.  She has it down to a science, so I followed her lead and we had a successful morning!

Below are a few of my treasures.  I kept seeing these pretty hot/cold thermoses and I tried so hard to justify buying one, but I seriously struggled to think of one occasion in which I would use it.  I sadly left it on the shelf.  I also left behind the ugliest crock-pot that I fell in love with.  It wasn't worth $10, so I don't feel too bad about it.  I also saw a tambourine I thought I should have.  I probably shouldn't be trusted to thrift alone.
I did buy a dress, skirt and this pretty top...and 3 heart-shaped dishes.

Good Morning

This morning, I made my coffee to-go and was at the dog park by 7am.  A pretty perfect morning for both of us!
(Which was followed by a not-so-perfect medicated bath.)
Below is my favorite picture.  He gets so far ahead of me, but once he realizes that he's far away, he sprints back.  Look at those ears!

Style Watch: Kindergarten Edition

My 28th birthday......Katherine's first day of kindergarten.  Same. exact. shoes.
Mine don't have the little straps, so actually they're totally different.  And do you know what? I don't even mind, because Katherine has great style.
And do you know what else? Definitely not the first time this has happened.
