Birthday Dress for Katherine Rose!

I've seen oliver + s patterns in magazines and online and always thought they'd be perfect for one cute little girl in particular. I went to their website today and fell in love with this pattern. You can either make a bow in the front or a little button. The difficulty rating was 3 out of 4 scissors, but if I take my time, I think I can do it! Hopefully Katherine doesn't end up with a version of the last dressed I sewed!
I have a little less than a month, so I'll have to get going finding fabric!

Future Quilt...shopping day

I went to JoAnn's today to shop for my new quilt. I settled on these colors so far. The red looks dark in the photo, but it's just a nice bright red. I'm debating whether or not to add a pattern...maybe polka dots? But, maybe I want to keep it crisp and clean looking. I haven't decided on a backing yet either.
When I got home and showed Marie the colors, she said, "Yep, those are the colors that I imaged you'd buy." I looked at my outfit and I was wearing 3 out of the 4 fabric colors.

Quilt Inspiration - Time to not sew a dress

If you read my last post and saw the dress I tried to sew, you won't be surprised to hear that I'm taking a clothes sewing break.
I've been perusing purlsoho.com for quilting inspiration. I'd love to create something sunny, cheerful and cute. This is a screen shot of my online shopping cart. I'm not ready to commit to these colors, but I love the palette.

I love this quilt!

In school news, I'm loving this quarter so far (it's only been a week). I'm taking ethics, which I think will be very interesting.
Unfortunately, my practicum field mentor resigned one week before I was supposed to start my practicum at College Hill Library, but fortunately, I'll now be doing my 100 hours of practicum work at Iliff.
I know I'm going to love it. Plus, it will be so convenient - no commute.

I've actually had time to read this weekend, besides my textbooks.

Ugliest Dress EVER!

Something (everything) went horribly wrong on this dress, but I decided to finish it off in case some miracle happened. I think the pattern was just too detailed and complicated for my skills..and that ruffle, don't get me started. Also, as you can clearly see, something went wrong with the sizing as well.

This dress reminds me of some awful housecoat or an outfit that Mimi would wear on The Drew Carey Show. Look, it's even the same color palette as what she's wearing in the photo! I'm going to reuse this dress to make something much cuter. It's too expensive to waste and there's no way I would wear this thing anywhere!

P.S. Denver is having quite the snow storm. DU is closed as well as Iliff and most other schools and businesses. We're supposed to get 16" today.

Madeleine Peyroux, William Fitzsimmons and Beth Summerfield

Above: I took this photo right after the concert, because I remembered it said "Madeleine Peyroux" and I took the picture and looked at it for a long time...no more Madeleine...now the sign reads, "Hapa Fuel" whatever that is. Oh well, you get the idea.

Last night Beth & I drove to Boulder to see Madeleine Peyroux. She's a really unique jazz singer that we've loved for a long time! She sounds like Billie Holiday.

I haven't seen Beth in forever and we had a lot to talk about so I'm glad we had a little (Beautiful!) drive to Boulder and back.

The event was at Boulder Theater and we got there early enough to get really great seats. Technically, they were recliner seats, but the reclining was less than graceful and let's say that we were very lucky to not spill any wine during the reclining process!

William Fitzsimmons opened for Madeleine and I'm buying his CD online as I write- he was so great! His music goes perfectly with a tall glass of Merlot. Below is my favorite Madeleine song.

House Arrest

Today the stairs up to my apartment were replaced, so we had to be either in or out of the apartment from 9-5pm. I chose in and so did Marie. I'd like to say I got a lot done, but I didn't. I did start sewing a dress though. These are the two prints (and only two prints) that Roey & I agreed on. They just happened to be the same print in different color palletes. I'm using the darker one for my first dress. It's going to be very cute...I hope.

Oliver goes to dentist

Check out these before and afters. I guess it's upside down, because these top two are afters. I'm supposed to brush his teeth every day to keep up with the cleanliness, so we'll see how that goes.

The vet told me that Mr. Oliver has damaged his own teeth by trying to eat things that aren't supposed to be eaten....she asked if he's ever tried to escape a kennel.......hmmmmm
I have no idea what she's talking about.......

They even trimmed his overgrown nails. No more pedipaws for Oliver.

My weekend with Roey!

My sister, Roey, flew in on Friday morning and flew back to Fargo Sunday evening. In between, we had a fabulous weekend!
Here are a few highlights.

This is Roey's friend, Jyl's, little boy, Michael. He's very expressive and giving us the stink-eye.
Above: Wasting time before our play, Girls Only. I laughed so hard that I cried. I cried so much that I got a rash under my eyes and the next morning, I felt like I had a hangover. I don't think I've ever laughed so much in my entire life!

Trying to pose with Oliver. I love this one.

Oliver left his bed in the middle of the night and cuddled with Roey.

Downtown @ the St. Patty's Day parade.

Below: The worst part of the weekend. These cows were part of the parade (who knows why...are they Irish?). Anyway, they were just running loose and check out those horns. They could've killed someone!! Yuck!

Working in the library......

Image via bn.com

Tomorrow I'm giving a presentation on small business resources. I'm @ the library at DU waiting for my last Young Adult Literature class to start and I'm doing a little business research. A chai latte sounds really wonderful right about now.

Only 3 more assignments and 2 more classes and then....drumroll.....Spring Break!

Spring Break Dress Making!

JoAnn's had some super sales, so I picked up a few patterns. I have spring break next week and all I want to do is sew, read, sleep and be outside. And, think about what an awesome weekend I had with Roey. I'm thinking of doing dress C in the top pattern and the ruffly one in the bottom pattern. Now I need to find some fabric!

A dog's birthday party!

Our neighbor Allie's little dachsund, Maggie, turned 6 today, so Oliver was invited for a birthday party at a nearby dog park. I never thought I'd be going to a dog party, but it was nice. The weather was absolutely perfect today and Oliver definitely got tired, which means I get more peaceful study time! Marie came with as a witness.
There were quite a few dachsunds at the party and even more at the dog park, so they lined up nicely for a photo. (Oliver was in the photo for a second, but he wasn't having it.)

This dog wasn't invited to the party, but isn't she sweet? That reminds me, I had a nightmare about cows last night.

All the party dogs.

Oliver got a "party-favor," but he felt uneasy with all the dogs invading his space, so he decided to bury it in the sand (and then ask for another one).

Oliver got a special surprise to take home - a baby dachsund.

The Agony of Cooking

Last night I had a few of my library school friends over for Parmesan Artichoke dip and of course, chocolate fountain. Well, as you can see, something went terribly, terribly wrong. I've been analyzing what went wrong and I think I've isolated the problem. I think I didn't get the chocolate hot enough and thereofore it clogged up the ogre part and after that, no matter what I did, I couldn't save it. Everyone had fun though and the chocolate tasted wonderful.
I bought potato chips for people to dip (along with strawberries and marshmallows) and they had never tried the wonderfulness that is chippers! Emily said, "I've eaten worse things."

On a side note, the artichoke dip was phenomenal. Marie will back me up on that.

Emily brought over her little puggle, Sally. Sally is as "outgoing" (and by outgoing, I mean insanely hyper) as Oliver and they chased each other for hours. Sally raided his toy basket and the couldn't have had more fun. As soon as Sally left, Oliver curled up and fell asleep. Here's a photo of Sally - I took it from Emily's facebook page.

Today Oliver had an appointment @ the vet. They said they "couldn't believe he was 6 years old" and "he is more fit than most dogs" and there "isn't a bit of fat to spare." All good news, but he has an infection in his gums and his teeth are very awful. I think I'm going to have to bit the bullet and get his teeth cleaned. He's in such good shape and I think he'll be around for awhile. Once his teeth get a good cleaning, I can work on the upkeep myself.

One week until Roey comes!!!

Have you seen this person?

Do you recognize me in my new duds? I went on my first road bike ride today and it was great! I can't believe how fast I can go! The first ride of many rides to come on my pink bike.

Gratulerer med dagen!

Gratulerer med dagen fader! or Happy Birthday Daddy!

Last night I watched this really, really great movie for my young adult literature class. It's called Everything is Illuminated.
Here's one of the best clips. Elijah Wood is an American traveling to the Ukraine to learn about his family history and the other two are his "tour guides." The grandfather thinks he is blind (he is also the driver and the dog is his "seeing eye bitch"). It's a great movie! There is nothing better than a cranky old man and a culture barrier. I just realized there are no subtitles in this clip, but you definitely get the idea.

Speaking of my young adult class, finals are coming and this project has consumed the entirety of my weekend. It's not due until the 10th, so that means I'm working before the last possible second.
