I will do anything but study

I'm procrastinating and so I decided to make Marie & I little...I don't know what you'd call these - napkins/coasters. Notice the detailed embroidery work.

Thank you, Frontier Airlines.

photo via here

I always love something to look forward to - especially when I get overwhelmed with grad school. I am lucky in that I don't really get "stressed out," but anyways, I have a lot of things to look forward to now!! Thank you, Frontier, for having such awesome deals. (Although, there is a $15 charge to check a bag).

1. Roey is coming!! Roey's visiting mid-March at the beginning of my spring break!
2. My good friend, Lyndsay, is coming to Denver over Easter. I haven't seen her since I moved and I know we'll have an amazing weekend. I've missed her!
3. I'm going to North Dakota April 23-27th!

I've made a short term goal to lose 15lbs by April 1st. I think I'm on the right track, so we'll see!
On a somewhat related note, Oliver has been having some gastro issues over the last few days. I'm glad he's a smart dog and he lets me know when he needs to go outside, but I'll be happy when I can sleep through the night.

I have my 2nd sewing class tonight. I need to round up some quarters for the parking meter.

P.S. I love these shoes from payless!

Sleepy Friday

If you're reading this, my last post didn't bore you to death, so congratulations. I better start spicing things up or I'll end up like this lady and that could be Oliver and nobody wants that. Although, I would love to knit a sweater for myself actually.

I have the day off today and I'm cold and sleepy. Yesterday, it was 70 - today, 29 degrees. Boo. Oliver & I went to the library because I had a book that was way overdue. I did a little bit of..well, I don't know what you'd call this...not baking - candy melting and stirring maybe. I'm lazy, so they are just a big clump, but they taste the same.

Oliver is really cold and tired too - no posing was involved..this is all Oliver.
Awww, he's still sleepy.

Sewing Class - Seams

I was on the waiting list for the sewing at the Fancy Tiger and someone canceled, so I got in! Yay. I missed the first class, but this week's theme was seams. Next week is bindings and tapes.

Here's a clean-finished seam

French seam
Flat felled seam
Zigzag finished seam

Our instructor suggested that we start a project so we can bring any questions to her in between our sessions. I would LOVE to make this skirt. The fabric is book-ish, which I love. I just ordered some boots (which will be here tomorrow) that will look a lot like these.
This photo is from the Fancy Tiger's website!

I had the day off today and I went to my new favorite place, the dog park. I bought a year pass @ King Soopers and the instructions said to place it in the right corner of your windshield. I assumed that meant the right corner when you're looking at your car, but judging from most of the other cars at the park, I was wrong.
Oliver made a lot of friends and went in the water for the first time ever... Until it got a little too deep and the current starting working against his little dachshund legs.
I love seeing people's reactions to him - they are amazed at how fast he is. He has no trouble keeping up with any dog!

It was 65 degrees today, but definitely very windy!

I talked to Roey via webcam for the first time last night. It was so fun (once we got everything working)! Welcome to the 21st century, Roey. I'm so proud of you.

Back to work tomorrow - BUT no classes this week because of the American Library Association's big Midwinter meeting, which is happening in Denver.

Something to Look Forward to!

AUGUST 14, 2009

Mark your calendars! Mary graduates from college (again)!

Sewing & Prison Time

It's been a pretty eventful weekend. Oliver & I have been to the dog park twice and nearly arrested for trespassing once. I also sewed a dress. And, it's been 55-60 degrees all weekend.

Okay, back to the the "nearly arrested" part. I've been to the dog park several times, but only with friends and we've never paid and this time, I got caught. The park guard was having a power trip and said, technically, he could arrest me for trespassing since I had out-of-state plates and I would be a flight risk.
He caught me (and several other people) as I was leaving, so I had to buy a pass, which was good until the next day @ noon. The next day, Saturday, Nicole & I took Oliver and the guard checked my pass and after a dramatic pause, said, "I just want you to know you have one hour and 15 minutes."
After he reluctantly let us through, he got in a fight with someone else about their season pass, so I don't feel too bad.

Side note: I was looking for a cool picture of a cop car, and the first hit from Google Images was from the Duluth newspaper, and after hearing all of Karley's crime stories, I am really not surprised.

Here's the first thing I sewed (for myself) with my new Singer! Nothing fancy, but it's cute I think.

Fancy Tiger

A friend of mine from class found out I like to sew and she told me about Fancy Tiger.

It's a fabric/craft shop here in Denver. They carry all of the designer fabrics I love - like Amy Butler and Michael Miller. Plus - they offer classes! They have a sewing skills set that has classes like zippers, buttons & buttonholes, hems, etc. They are all Wednesday night, which is when I have my Business Resources class, but since there are only 6 people in the class, we aren't meeting every week.
I just called to sign up for the zippers class, but they are all full! Boo. I'm on the waiting list, so when they announce new dates, they'll call me.
I really, really want to go there this weekend to look around.

I've spent all afternoon writing a paper and I'm so tired, but I have class at 7pm. I have a pretty hefty assignment due for tomorrow's class too. Here's my grocery list:
1. coffee creamer
2. diet coke (12 pack)
3. green/chai tea

Little Mary

I'm taking a young adult literature class and I've been complaining because I have to read 40 books in 10 weeks (9 weeks now). But, I'm coming around I think, for now anyway. I'm channeling the younger Mary and re-reading some of my favorites from my own young adult days. I want to read all of the Ramona Quimby books, but I might have to stick to one.

I love Domino Magazine

I got the Domino magazine in the mail yesterday and I fell in love. First of all, I want that mustard skirt REALLY bad. Maybe I could sew something like that..hmmm...I already have shoes almost identical to hers and I have red tights like in the photo below. I also love her hair. Acutally, I love everything about these two photos. (Roey, I can hear you laughing at me for saying love too much..I can't help it, okay?)

Christmas Part II

So, you're probably asking yourself..."Mary, you had such an expansive Christmas list...what did you actually get?" Well, I'll tell you.

First, I got the amazing Curvy Singer sewing machine. It is a pretty high-end model, so it has any type of option I could dream of. I used it to sew Karley's dress and I'm looking forward to getting a lot of years out of it. Oh, also pictured, the "perfect sweater" from Roey.

Next, the journals from Pottery Barn from my siblings. I cheated and wrote in the January one during December. I just couldn't wait. I need to do some exciting things to fill all those pages.

Joey liked them too.

Those are all the photos I have, but check out these two from Jamie. Bill burned me a CD of their holiday pictures and if he didn't want me showing these pictures to everyone, then he wouldn't have put it on the CD, right? These are the two best pictures I've seen in a long time. Joey and Katherine look so symmetrical.

Christmas Recap

Here are a few gems from my visit home to North Dakota. Enjoy.

Oliver's favorite sunning spot. He was always perched up there when my dad was outside.

Dad & Rose's Christmas photo

My brother, Bill, wii boxing. (Most people box standing up, but oh well).

My sister, Roey, bought Oliver this cute little Santa suit. He liked it, I think.

Katherine boxing. She's wearing the dress I sewed for her.

Karley and I. This is the dress I sewed for her.

Santa Oliver guarding his buddy.

I think she liked it!

Joey & Katherine, watching the lefse master.
